Southern Style Cabbage
Southern Style Cabbage
Cabbage is a go-to side dish in the south, but it has to be fried, not boiled. When you pan fry cabbage, it removes the added water and gives it more flavor. Most people use bacon as their protein but I use beef smoked sausage. The reason being is since there is so much water in cabbage, it can cause the bacon to get soggy and the smoked sausage can hold up to it and not loose its texture. Cut 1 whole cabbage in half then fourths, the smaller you cut it, the faster it will cook.
Slice the smoked sausage into circles then into half moons.
In a pan, add 1 tbsp of vegetable oil. Make sure the pan is evenly coated with the oil. Once it is hot, add the sausage to the pan.
Once the sausage is browned, add 1/2 of the cabbage. It will be difficult fitting it in the pan, but dont worry, the cabbage will shrink down in size. Cover and cook for 10 minutes and stir.
Remove the lid. Once the cabbage has started to decrease in size, add the remaining cabbage to the pot. Cook for 20 more minutes. Make sure to stir or the cabbage and sausage will burn at the bottom.
Once your cabbage is almost fully a brown color, add 1 tbsp garlic powder, 1 tbsp onion powder, 1 tsp salt, 1/4 tsp black pepper and 1 tsp garlic salt. Stir and taste. If it is not seasoned to your liking, add more.
Cook for another 10-15 minutes or until the cabbage is completely brown. Serve with some cornbread and your main dish and ENJOY!
