Dr. Pepper Glazed Wings
Dr. Pepper Glazed Chicken Wings
While we were in Louisiana during the holidays, my husband, cousin and my cousin’s wife took a break from shopping and had dinner at a nearby restaurant. My cousin heard about the delicious wings at this place, so we decided to try them. On the menu were some Dr. Pepper glazed wings, so of course, we had to try them. I tasted them and loved them, but they were missing some spice. Anytime I eat something really sweet, I have to balance it out and add some spice. That’s when I knew, I could make these. It might sound difficult, but it’s a really easy process. You can use any soda of your choice. I started by cutting up whole wings into drummets and flats. “Flats” are my favorite part of the chicken wing. I only eat the flats and give my husband and daughter the drummets, they think I’m crazy.
Once the chicken is cut, add 1 tbsp of cajun seasoning and coat each wing.
While you are cutting up the chicken, heat vegetable oil in a cast iron skillet. Once the oil has reached a temperature of 350-375 degrees, add the chicken. Fry for 5-7 minutes on each side. Pierce the chicken to make sure it is cooked in the middle. Put the chicken on a paper towel to drain the excess grease. Optional: Instead of deep frying, feel free to air fry the chicken on 400 degrees for 20 minutes. Flipping the chicken every 10 minutes. The chicken will come out crispy and delicious!
Dice one half of an jalapeno pepper, seeds included. This will add spice to the glaze.
In a pot, add 1 1/2 cups of brown sugar and 1 cup of Dr. Pepper. Stir well to make sure the brown sugar has completely dissolved. Add in the juice of 1/2 lemon and 1 tbsp of diced jalapeno. Simmer for 20 minutes on med heat. The glaze will thicken. It will get thicker the longer it cools.
Pour the glaze over the chicken wings and toss. Put them in the oven on broil 550 degrees for 5 minutes.
